THE REST of the morning was spent moving cases of wine and mead to the truck. Having it parked partly in the building made it a lot easier. Raph, Dom, and I hauled boxes on two-wheelers while Leo fussed with the paperwork. Andy got stuck making more boxes and filling them.
The work went quickly, but by the end of it, I was sweaty and dirty. I thought of the lake longingly, and I was quite willing to jump into the water without a suit. We washed up a little in the sink, but I wanted something more. I was okay enough to eat lunch, at least. It wasn’t like the rest of them weren’t hot and sweaty too. Raph’s sweatpants were sticking to him in such a way that suggested to me he wasn’t wearing underwear.
“We can finish after lunch,” Raph said. “If we straighten things out now, we don’t have to deal with it later.”
“What’s for lunch?” Andy asked.
“Dom is doing hamburgers on the grill,” Raph said. “After that, he and Leo are doing deliveries.”
“We’ll be cleaning up after lunch, then,” I said.
“You skipped out on breakfast,” Andy teased.
“He helped cook,” Raph said.
“Everyone helped with breakfast,” Andy said with a smile.
“And Marcus can help me with supper,” Raph said. “I was thinking steaks and potatoes, if people don’t mind.”
“We are starving grad students,” Andy said. “We’ll eat anything.”
“Speak for yourself,” I said. “Even I have standards. I won’t eat off the food cart outside the Fine Arts building.”
Andy just laughed, and we went back to the house. Dom was cooking on a stone fire pit between the house and the lake. It had a rough-hewn table and chairs near it, with a good view of the lake. Leo was setting the table.
“What do you want to drink?” Leo asked. “We have a nice cherry lambric beer, or a stout.”
“The lambric,” I said, and Andy echoed my choice.
I wasn’t surprised to see there were bottles of water on the table too. I grabbed one and drained most of it in one swallow. The burgers smelled wonderful, and I had to stop myself from taking one off the grill as it was cooking. I nibbled on some of the chips on the table instead.
Leo went to get the beer. He came out of the house with it and a plate with burger fixings, while Raph carried out some more beer and the condiments. Lunch was ready in a couple of minutes, and we all sat down.
I took one bite of my burger and wanted to moan. It didn’t taste like a regular burger, but it was good. “These are delicious,” I said when I swallowed what was in my mouth.
“Lamb and venison,” Dom said. “Leo and I do some hunting in the winter.”
“You don’t mind eating Bambi?” Andy asked before taking a huge bite out of his burger.
“So long as I don’t have to shoot and clean it, I’m good with it,” I said.
“I’m the same way,” Raph added. “They can hang out in a deer blind and freeze their asses off.
